Mondi has confirmed a fatal shooting incident that occurred at company’s Richards Bay mill in South Africa. A gunman has reportedly shot two colleagues, killing one, before turning the gun on himself.
The injured person was transported to hospital.
"The safety and well-being of our employees remains our top priority. We are providing support to our employees and have taken the necessary steps to ensure the site remains safe.
"We will continue to cooperate fully with the authorities and will provide further information as appropriate," said Mondi South Africa CEO Jason Smith, as quoted by Zululand Observer.
Mondi announced that emergency protocols were immediately activated, and the site was secured. An investigation is under way.
Mondi Richards Bay mill produces two key products: Baycel, a premier grade bleached hardwood pulp made from 100-percent eucalyptus fibre, and Baywhite, a white top kraft linerboard.
