Idled AV Terrace Bay in Northern Ontario has been fined for two Environmental Protection Act violations related to discharges into the water and air that exceeded guidelines, NIP Impression reports.
The mill generates industrial effluent that undergoes treatment prior to discharging to Lake Superior via Blackbird Creek, according to the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks.
Each month, the mill must test the effluent. "On May 1, 2023, 100 per cent of the rainbow trout died during an acute lethality test performed on a grab sample of the mill's final effluent," a press release from the Ministry said.
The company immediately reported the incident to the ministry, as it is required to do.
The Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has fined the company Inc. $525,000. The company was also ordered to pay a $131,250 victim fine surcharge, according to Paper Advance.
The charges come from two separate environmental incidents that occurred in May 2023, when the mill was still operational.
AV Terrace Bay Inc. operates a kraft pulp mill in Terrace Bay, Ontario. The facility has been idle since early 2024 and is currently in care and maintenance mode.
