The water weight and the corresponding dry content at the end of the forming section are important parameters for the optimal operation of the former. These values are usually recorded sporadically using handheld measurement devices.
However, since the factors that influence the process in the former are constantly changing - such as the settings of the vacuum elements or the condition of the forming fabrics - the water weight should be continuously monitored. This is why Voith Paper has developed OnQ FormingSens, a sensor that measures the water weight continuously using high-frequency microwave technology with the highest level of accuracy.
Through real-time measurement of the water weight, an optimal water weight can be continuously defined to ensure sustained process improvements. This leads to efficiency increases in several areas: the start-up process following shutdowns is shortened as a result of faster threading and thus increases productivity. In the case of multi-ply headboxes, runability is enhanced by optimizing the couching of single layers on the basis of the measurement. Furthermore, optimal dewatering of the forming fabrics over their entire service life leads to energy savings.
OnQ FormingSens contributes to increased safety at the paper machine: thanks to the completely harmless microwave technology, the radioactive sources used in many handheld measurement devices are omitted. In addition, since measurement is done online there is no danger to the operators, as there is with the usual manual measurement process.
Due to its large measurement range, the sensor can be used for nearly all grammage and former types. OnQ FormingSens has a contact surface made of smooth, low-abrasion ceramic material. Long-term field tests have shown that the sensor does not cause any wire wear or leave marks on the paper.
Another decisive advantage is the fact that the operating costs are minimal, since the sensor has no moving parts and is completely maintenance-free.
