Metsä Board, the world’s leading producer of wallpaper base, emphasised the sustainability of its extensive Cresta range at Heimtextil 2014. The Cresta range includes duplex and simplex wallpaper base as well as non-woven products, made at Metsä Board’s Kyro mill which holds both PEFC and FSC chain-of-custody certification. The company also fulfils the obligations of the EU Timber Regulation and US Lacey Act, which prohibit the placing and trading of illegally harvested timber and timber products on the market.

“Sustainability is high on the agenda of leading retailers in the home décor market. We can supply them with a product based on renewable and traceable fresh forest fibres using bioenergy in production,” says Olli Haaranoja, VP, Head of Kyro Wallpaper business unit.

The use of high quality fresh forest fibres means the Cresta range is supremely adaptable to current wallpaper trends. They give the wallpaper base strength, ideal for textured or embossed wallpapers or those with natural fibre weaves. Their consistent quality also makes them particularly suitable for florals with a white background or as a base for strongly coloured retro or geometric patterns.

The Cresta range includes bases that meet the demands of all printing and converting processes as well as the functionality of paste-the-wall, washable and strippable wallcoverings. There are bases suitable for expanded vinyl wallcoverings, PVC coating and paper wallcoverings, and specialist products that offer resistance to high temperatures in converting or are suitable for inks containing pearlescent pigments.

Energy at Metsä Board Kyro comes from a biopower plant that has replaced the use of fossil natural gas with CO2-neutral, discarded wood. This has reduced CO2 emissions by approximately 100,000 tpa and resulted in halving the carbon footprint of the Cresta range.
