The Japanese industrial group Komatsu is strengthening its position in the forestry sector by acquiring the Swedish company Malwa Forest AB, a specialist in small-scale forestry machines. The transaction is expected to be completed no later than April 1, 2026, subject to customary conditions.
The deal was announced in a press release from Komatsu Ltd.
Komatsu Forest, the group’s Sweden-based forestry division, views the acquisition as part of a broader strategy to address evolving demands in modern forestry.
– This agreement is a natural continuation of our ambition to find the best solutions to current challenges in forestry, says Peter Hasselryd, Head of Marketing and Sales at Komatsu Forest, in a statement.
– We welcome Malwa Forest as an important part of our operations, where together we will meet the needs of modern forestry.
Shift toward smaller machines
The background to the acquisition reflects a clear shift in the forestry market. Today’s industry is increasingly shaped by stricter environmental requirements, soil protection measures and pressure to reduce climate impact.
This development has driven growing interest in smaller and lighter machines that cause less damage to the forest ground.
Komatsu points out that demand for more specialised equipment is rising, particularly in sensitive forest environments where traditional, heavier machinery can be difficult to use.
At the same time, smaller machines typically offer lower production capacity, which may limit efficiency in large-scale harvesting operations. As a result, the technology is mainly used in selected applications rather than as a full replacement for conventional equipment.
Malwa targets global expansion
Malwa Forest, founded in Sweden, has experienced strong growth in recent years within the niche segment of compact forestry machines. The company sees the acquisition as an opportunity to expand internationally.
– Malwa has developed strongly in recent years, and we see growing demand for our lightweight forestry machines, says Magnus Wallin, founder and Head of Business Development at Malwa Forest, according to the press release.
– With Komatsu Forest, we gain a strong industrial partner that provides long-term stability and enables continued growth. It also allows us to bring the Malwa concept to more customers worldwide.
Part of a global industrial group
Komatsu Forest AB is part of Komatsu Ltd., one of the world’s largest manufacturers of construction and mining equipment. The company has a strong presence in the forestry industry, particularly in the Nordic region, where mechanisation and technological development have long played a central role.
The acquisition of Malwa Forest expands Komatsu’s product portfolio in a segment that is growing, but also characterised by technical and economic trade-offs.

Fact check
Compact forestry machines are increasingly used in thinning operations and environmentally sensitive areas. While they reduce soil impact, they generally cannot match the productivity of larger harvesters, limiting their use in high-volume logging.
