Finnish forest industry company Metsä Fibre has once again been awarded the Platinum rating by sustainability assessment provider EcoVadis. The recognition places the company among the top one per cent of businesses evaluated globally within the pulp, paper and board industry.

Metsä Fibre has maintained its position among the industry's highest-ranked companies since 2019 and has now received EcoVadis’ top distinction for the eighth consecutive year.

Strong Results Across Sustainability Categories

In the latest assessment, Metsä Fibre achieved high scores across all major categories evaluated by EcoVadis. These include environmental performance, labour and human rights, business ethics, and sustainable procurement.

The assessment is based on internationally comparable criteria and is widely used by companies to evaluate the sustainability performance of suppliers and business partners.

According to Metsä Fibre, the result reflects the company’s long-term efforts to integrate sustainability throughout its operations.

- Sustainability is visible in our daily work across the entire value chain, from safety and the efficient use of energy and raw materials to responsible sourcing and transparent ways of working. Receiving EcoVadis’ highest recognition for the eighth consecutive year demonstrates our long-term commitment and our continuous drive to improve, said Ismo Nousiainen, CEO of Metsä Fibre.

Supply Chains Face Increasing Scrutiny

Sustainability assessments are becoming increasingly important for industrial companies as customers, investors, and regulators place greater emphasis on transparency and responsible supply chains.

Metsä Fibre said the feedback provided through the EcoVadis evaluation is used to further develop sustainability performance together with employees, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders.

The growing focus on supply-chain emissions and environmental accountability has elevated the importance of third-party sustainability ratings across a wide range of industries.

Major Player in the Forest Industry

Metsä Fibre is part of Metsä Group and produces pulp, sawn timber and a range of bioproducts, including biochemicals and bioenergy.

The company’s products are manufactured from Nordic wood and are marketed as alternatives to fossil-based materials.

In 2025, Metsä Fibre reported revenue of €2.6 billion and employed approximately 1,400 people. Metsä Group as a whole generated revenue of €5.8 billion during the same year.

The group’s parent company, Metsäliitto Cooperative, is owned by around 90,000 Finnish forest owners.

Fact Check:

EcoVadis is an international sustainability ratings provider that evaluates companies and suppliers based on environmental performance, labour and human rights, business ethics and sustainable procurement practices. Platinum is the highest rating available and is awarded only to the top-performing companies within each sector.

However, critics have noted that sustainability ratings often rely heavily on company-reported data, policies and documentation rather than comprehensive independent audits of all operational activities. As a result, such ratings should be viewed as one indicator of sustainability performance rather than a definitive measure of real-world environmental impact.
