A new pulpwood processing plant may soon be built in Latvia and will be positioned as one of the largest facilities of such kind in the entire Baltics region, according to a recent report, published by the Latvian Latvijas avīze, citing on its sources in the country’s government.

Normunds Struve, Deputy Director of the Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture of Latvia, comments:

«We have submitted a proposal to support the domestic forestry sector, that will also take place through the building of a new large-scale factory, that will specialize on pulpwood processing»

According to him, the new factory, will focus on the production of paper and other products.

Most of the funds for the project are expected to be provided by the EU.

Recall that in the early 2000s, the Finnish company Metsaliitto (now known as Metsa) planned to build a large pulp mill in Latvia worth 900 million euros, however decided to suspend these plans in 2005.
