Poor medication adherence – not following medication regimens as directed – is increasingly recognized as a significant source of waste and has been estimated to cost 125,000 lives annually in the U.S. According to a Harvard University study (2010), as many as half of all patients do not adhere faithfully to their prescription-medication regimens – and the result is more than $100 billion spent each year on avoidable hospitalizations.
