Recently Pictou County’s federal Member of Parliament, the Honourable Peter MacKay, announced a $28 million investment in Northern Pulp Nova Scotia by Natural Resources Canada and the Green Transformation Program Fund.
The federal investment, together with Northern Pulp’s capital program, enables the company to move forward with three very important clean-tech projects. These projects will have a profound impact on Northern Pulp’s mill operations and the community in which it operates.
First, Northern Pulp is allocating funding to reduce odour emissions from our Abercrombie Point mill by at least 70 percent. This investment benefits employees, families and the broader community who live and work in Pictou County. It also benefits visitors and tourists who visit Pictou County to enjoy all that the region has to offer. Northern Pulp is doing detailed engineering on the odour emissions project; construction will begin this summer and the completion is scheduled for the end of 2011.
Second, as a result of the Green Transformation Program, Northern Pulp is upgrading the mill’s boiler to make it cleaner and more efficient which helps improve the mill’s operational efficiencies and environmental performance. Project completion is scheduled for the end of 2011.
Third, Northern Pulp is increasing production of renewable energy from black liquor solids. Both of these projects will be operational after our fall shutdown at the end of 2011. Project completion is scheduled for the end of 2011.
The three projects will enhance the environmental, social and competitive impact of Northern Pulp’s employees, partners and surrounding community.
While Northern Pulp’s core business is pulp and paper, the company is also a renewable energy company. The company has generated its own electricity since 1967 and hopes to be a bigger contributor to Nova Scotia’s green energy transformation in the future.
Building the economy, being environmentally responsible and sustainable are objectives that Northern Pulp is very proud to support.
Northern Pulp believes that renewable energy means good jobs, stable prices and a clean environment. Through partnerships with employees, governments, customers, suppliers and communities in which the company does business, Northern Pulp is a part of Nova Scotia’s emerging green economy.
