Cascades Fine Papers Group received a 2010 Boreal Award during the annual gala presented by the Boreal Leadership Council and the Canadian Boreal Initiative (CBI), for its contribution to the safeguard and sustainable development of the Boreal Forest. Thanks to its recycled papers' small ecological footprint, Cascades stood out from other candidates.
In an aboriginal tradition and warm atmosphere, the CBI welcomed members of the First Nations, environmental groups, scientists and professionals to pay tribute to groups and individuals who are passionate about the protection of boreal forest resources.
The Canadian Boreal Forest is a large ecosystem that produces oxygen, purifies water and regulates our climate. The CBI contributes to its welfare through its association with organizations, with which they undertake policy development and research projects, with one common goal: improving the management of natural resources.
The production of recycled paper has a significant impact on the forest, as it efficiently reuses a forest resource before cutting down new trees. Cascades uses the urban forest – recycling bins – rather than the conventional forest to make the majority of its products. This process saves the equivalent of 35 million trees each year. Overall, the production of recycled paper uses less water and produces less waste and air emissions than virgin paper. Moreover, Cascades uses biogas, a renewable local energy, which avoids emitting the equivalent of 70,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
