BASF has teamed up with Omya, a global producer of industrial minerals, to develop coater-ready barrier solutions for paper and cardboard packaging.
According to BASF, the upcoming Mineral Oil Ordinance of the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) is interested in water-based barrier solutions for paper and cardboard packaging. BASF provides barrier dispersions while Omya supplies the pigments and experience to manufacture these products.
The partnership will enable BASF and Omya to cater to the increasing demand for coater-ready barrier solutions. “In future, this will provide a service for customers who for capacity and plant technology reasons cannot prepare formulations and mixtures independently,” according to BASF statement.
The first commercial product will be made available in the first quarter of 2015.
