Sappi, one of the world’s leading producers of coated fine paper and chemical cellulose, has officially announced that the conversion of its US paper mill into a producer of pulp used in textiles.
The mill is located in Cloquet (Minneapolis), while total volume of investments in the implementation of the project estimated at $170 million.
According to the company, after the conversion the plant will specialize on the production of “specialised cellulose,” which is also known as “dissolving wood pulp” and can be used by manufacturers to produce textile fibers, as well as pharmaceutical, beauty, and household products.
Overall, Sappi has a capacity to produce more than 1.3 million metric tons of specialised cellulose a year—including 330,000 metric tons at the Cloquet facility.
