Mondi Group, one of the world’s largest paper and packaging producers will stop one of its two paper machines, producing newsprint at its Merebank mill in South Africa.
The capacity of the machine is 100,000 tons per year. The company has already started negotiations with the union. The stop is scheduled for the end of May.
According to the company’s plans, the second paper machine will continue working, while its capacity will be 120,000 tons per year.
An official representative of Mondi said that the decision to close the machine could be explained by the continuing decline of newsprint consumption in the domestic market and the reorganization processes in the publishing and printing industry.
