The Swedish start-up company NLAB Solar has filed a patent for production of opaque solar cells that can be printed on paper or similar materials. It now hopes to be able to utilize the paper industry’s processes, reports Papernet.
NLAB Solar also plans to set up a pilot production plant in Stockholm that would be operationally ready in 2013.
The product called Dye Sensitized Solar Cells does not, unlike solar cells, need direct sunlight to be effective. They generate electricity even when the sky is cloudy because they are based on dyed titanium dioxide instead of using silicone as the semiconductor.
NLAB Solar has received a grant of 1.8 million Euros under the LIFE+ project which finances cutting edge environmental initiatives in the European Union.
