Emerging nations will drive growth of global pulp and paper market this year

Global production of pulp and paper this will significantly increase, with the highest growth rates are expected to be observed in Central and Eastern Europe as well as China and South America, according to projections of Dr. Heinz Zinner Chairman of JSC "Arkhangelsk PPM", one of Russia’s largest pulp and paper mills.

According to him, in regions such as Western Europe, the growth rate will be small or even minimal, but the emerging markets again will show good demand and continuing growth, as before.

Heinz Zinner comments:

«The EU and North America currently produce a lot more paper than they can consume. Therefore the production of pulp, paper and paperboard in this regions will decline this year. The same is true for Japan.

Analyzing the major industry trends, Zinner said that the recent financial crisis has boosted consumption in certain market segments, particularly in newsprint and light coated, wood-free paper.

In case of Russia, which has one of the world’s largest for paper production, the country’s recent accession into the WTO and the associated with this reduction of import dutes has not resulted in the crisis in the local industry, as more than 85% of local production accounted for large companies, producing quality products, in terms of price and quality.
