Hermes Fulfilment GmbH uses from now on for storage purposes size optimized corrugated board shelf boxes, designed by packaging specialist Smurfit Kappa.
Hermes Fulfilment operates order-picking warehouses for a large number of companies, where thousands of articles are held ready in plastic storage trays for the storage and retrieval system. The same blue plastic containers were used for shelf storage as for the shipment of ready-for-sale goods in other storage systems and in the returns processing.
“For pure storage we have now developed a storage packaging, which optimised dimensions for the available shelf space, and optimal fit for the shelf rear restraint”, explains Reinhard Lange, Head of Product Development at Smurfit Kappa in Lübeck.
“This innovation meets the needs of our quest for environmentally sound and sustainable solutions”, declares Sven Redelin, Project Manager for Logistics Planning at Hermes Fulfilment warmly, “In addition we have optimised the use of storage space with uniform storage containers and we need less plastic containers. The original plastic trays were in particular use in our fulfilment processes for the handling and transport of return goods. This represents a capital investment that can be reduced by focusing on the use of the ultra-stable plastic trays for transport. Furthermore, due to a much shorter storage packaging lead time we can react considerably more swiftly to volume fluctuations in transport handling.”
