The Italian companies Zechini Gra-For and Smyth have recently struck a deal according to which Zechini will be the exclusive distributor of the newly developed thread sewing machine Smyth F1088 all over the world.
Based near Turin, Italy, Smyth have been producing book sewing machines ever since their foundation in 1958. The recently developed F1088 manual sewing machine is a solution for digital printers who wish to be self-sufficient in production of sewn books. In spite of its small footprint the F1088 can handle signatures up to the maximum size of 490 x 520 mm. Such a size range makes the F1088 interesting also for conventional trade binders looking for a way to handle outsize jobs and very short runs efficiently. An incorporated thread cut-off device enables the operator to easily separate sewn book blocks from one another at the delivery.
A sewn book blocks has significant advantages over an adhesive bound book block irrespective of the type of glue used: it can be used with all kinds of paper, it has better lay-flat properties, it is more wear-resistant and its spine can be formed more easily into the final shape required.
