White Birch Paper Company will temporarily cease production at its Stadacona newsprint mill, in Quebec City, beginning December 9, according to Pulp&Paper Canada. The decision puts 600 employees out of work.
White Birch is the second largest newsprint manufacturer in North America. It has been in creditor protection status since Feb. 2010. According to the company the reason for the move is decreasing demand for newsprint and higher fibre costs, coupled with the inability to come to an economic agreement with union employees.
