PulPaper focuses on the circular economy and bio-based products

The recent event was arranged in the spring of 2014. That year the visitors came from a total of 70 different countries. The photo: Pulpaper Exhibition Center

PulPaper is a leading exhibition and conference event in the forest industry, organized in Helsinki, Finland. The PulPaper, PacTec and Wood & Bioenergy events, which provide a versatile image of the forest industry, are held in Messukeskus, Helsinki, 29-31 May 2018.

About 400 companies and the thousands of visitors are expected to participate. The coal mining industry is currently in a break-up period, as it has become more aware than before about how the industry affects the environment. This has been taken into account in the event's program, which has a clear environmental focus.

The main theme of the event is "Visit tomorrow today". The theme aims at new innovations and new technologies that can be used to develop the forest industry in an increasingly digital world, respecting the environment.

There are versatile seminars offered during all three days of the event. The seminar, Business Forum, is for business leaders. The subjects treated range from consumer habits and sustainable development to innovations and leadership changes.

During the seminar PulPaper Conference addressed to experts and researchers in the forest industry, organized on 30-31 May, 40 experts, researchers and representatives from companies from the Nordic countries, Japan and North America will hold speeches. Topics highlighted include circular economics, use of biomass, climate change and the development of biorefineries.

Environmental standards are often seen as a burden in industry. PulPaper, however, regards the standards as an opportunity. As environmentally friendly thinking and responsible production increasingly control consumer purchasing behavior, innovations respond to consumers' wishes, both in terms of ecological thinking, functionality, aesthetics and price levels, the company's trump card in competition.

During the PulPaper Conference, many innovations are being revamped that renews the entire industry. Such innovations include database sensors for the treatment of wastewater in the cellulosic industry, a new catalytic bleaching method and the utilization of industrial waste as a fertilizer product in agriculture. In addition, a research project is being presented which seeks breakthrough technology for a chemical mass production method.

Plastics is the dominant packaging material around the world and plastic waste is a major environmental burden due to its long degradation. Bioplast has begun to be used in almost all areas of industry: electronics, agriculture, textiles, and healthcare. There are visions that wood will be the future's renewable raw material used in packaging materials and textiles.

PulPaper Conference presents solutions based on renewable wood raw materials and replacing fossil materials. The Swedish start-up company Cellutech reveals what new materials the company is currently developing from wood.

In addition, the visitors will review the development of bioplastics at the moment. As a corporate case, the Finnish startup company Sulapac is active in the packaging industry. The company shows a good example of smart packaging planning.

The packaging material, made of wood and developed for cosmetics products, makes ecology a luxury. Due to the fact that Sulapac can compete with the corresponding packaging materials made of plastic in terms of price levels and materials can be mass produced with the same tools as plastic, a competitive advantage is created.

Entrance to the PulPaper exhibition is free. Notification of the paid program contents - PulPaper Conference, Business Forum and 3D Printing of Biomaterials - is available at www.pulpaper.fi. In addition, two excursions are offered to companies that are precursors in the industry. Visit at the Metsä Group's new bioproduct factory in Äänekoski and the Kotkamills carton factory will be held May 31st-June.

Forest industry products account for about 20 percent of Finland's exports, and success in the forest industry is important for Finland. The forest industry is a significant employer, especially in the countryside - it employs approximately 41,000 people and indirectly around 140,000 people.

The main theme "Visit tomorrow today" is aimed at new innovations and new technologies that can be used to develop the forest industry in an increasingly digitized world, respecting the environment.
