Pacific Civil & Infrastructure, Inc., has commenced construction of the $184,000,000 Columbia Pulp Lyons Ferry Straw Pulp Plant near Starbuck, Washington, USA.

The project’s expansive scope of work includes the improvement approximately 40 acres of Columbia’s 449 acre site requiring over 250,000 cubic yards of excavation, 6,500 yards of structural concrete, installation of water wells to depths of over 900 feet deep, 4,300 feet of railroad spur, installation of gas-fired power and steam facility, electrical and process control infrastructure, and over 30,000 feet of process piping.

When completed, the facility will utilize waste straw purchased from area farms and convert it in an environmentally friendly way into pulp, which will then be used to manufacture products such as food containers, packaging cartons and tissue paper, along with a variety of other products. Columbia Pulp estimates up to 90 local jobs will be created by the facility’s operations.

Columbia Pulp selected Pacific Civil as its general contractor in early 2015 to benefit from contractor input during the design and constructability phase of the of the project development. “We’re thrilled to do our part by constructing a facility that is better for the environment, produces high quality non-wood fiber, eliminates a waste product for the local farmers, and creates long-term jobs for the local community. It’s a win for everyone.” states Ralph Raymond, Pacific Civil Project Manager.

The project is expected to take 14 months with a peak construction workforce in excess of 120 skilled craft positions.
