Finnish forest machine manufacturer Ponsse reported first-quarter results well below expectations, even as order intake came in stronger than anticipated, highlighting a mixed outlook for the sector.

For the period January to March, comparable operating profit reached 1.5 million euros. This fell significantly short of analysts’ expectations of 6.6 million euros, according to data compiled by FactSet.

Weak profitability despite stronger demand

Despite the earnings miss, Ponsse reported that demand for new machines remained more resilient than expected. Order intake increased during the quarter, suggesting that underlying customer activity has not slowed to the same extent as profitability figures might indicate.

The company pointed to cost pressures, currency fluctuations and continued global economic uncertainty as key factors weighing on margins. Supply chain constraints and component costs also remained significant challenges.

– The result was weaker than expected, but the order intake shows that customer interest remains, the company said in its report, as cited by Kauppalehti.

For the full year, Ponsse expects operating profit to remain at the previous year’s level, reflecting a cautious outlook amid ongoing market volatility.

Cyclical market with growing pressure

Ponsse is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of forest machinery, specialising in harvesters and forwarders. The company is headquartered in Vieremä, Finland, and exports to a wide range of markets, including Sweden, Germany, North America and Latin America.

Demand for forest machines is closely tied to the performance of the forestry and construction industries, as well as broader economic conditions. In recent years, rising interest rates, weaker construction activity and uncertain raw material demand have dampened investment across several regions.

At the same time, Ponsse has continued to invest in product development and digital solutions, including connected machines and systems aimed at improving operational efficiency in forestry. The company has also expanded its service business, which has become an increasingly important revenue stream.

Production footprint and strategic shifts

Manufacturing remains concentrated in Finland, where Ponsse operates its main production facility. The company has built a global network of service providers and dealers, a critical factor in maintaining customer support and securing recurring revenue.

Geopolitical developments have also affected operations. Ponsse withdrew from the Russian market in 2022, which had previously been a significant source of revenue. This exit has required a strategic shift toward other regions.

The company has since sought to strengthen its position in North America and Europe, although demand varies considerably between markets and segments. Investment in heavy machinery remains highly cyclical, contributing to volatility in order intake.

The recent increase in orders may indicate early signs of stabilisation in parts of the market, but profitability continues to be under pressure.
