Smurfit Westrock will invest 300 million SEK in its paper mill in Piteå, Sweden. The investment includes a modernizing of mills recovery boiler, according to Piteå-Tidningen.
The investment means that the mill's traditional, annual two-week inspection stop in the summer will now be one month long.
The existing recovery boiler has been in operation since 1972.
“It has a very long service life if you replace parts regularly and take care of it,” says Peder Ögren, project manager, to Piteå-Tidningen.
The upgrade also increases the recovery boiler's capacity by 7.5 percent. Which in turn opens up for higher production.
“The investment in the recovery boiler also involves safety-enhancing measures to be able to run the plant safely for a long time to come. At the same time, we extend the service life and increase capacity, Peder Ögren further tells the newspaper.
Smurfit Westrock Piteå produces 700,000 tons of unbleached and bleached kraftliner annually in two paper machines.
