Munksjö and T.CON have announced the successful migration to a new ERP and MES landscape – including analytics, CO₂ accounting, and digital shift logs. Their choice was a greenfield rollout of SAP Cloud ERP Private and the T.CON MES SUITE to ensure productivity, consistency, and to cope with regulatory sustainability requirements. The go-live at the factory in Unterkochen (Germany) is considered the system template that serves as a blueprint for all global locations.

High-quality specialty papers meets digital expertise

The Munksjö Group, headquartered in Sweden, is one of the leading suppliers of specialty papers in Europe and worldwide. With a focus on sustainability and innovation, Munksjö manufactures, among other things, technical specialty papers for surface coating of wood-based materials (chipboard and MDF boards), pre-impregnated papers, thin print papers (TPP), and backing papers for labels.

As part of a strategic realignment, Munksjö was spun off from the Ahlstrom Group in October 2022. The goal: an IT system that is independent, future-proof, and scalable. The challenge was clearly defined: to disconnect five plants from the old systems by September 2026 at the latest and transfer them to a new digital system environment – without restricting ongoing operations.

Partner helped to realize project launch under high pressure

With the “Sunrise” project, Munksjö opted for a complete greenfield implementation of SAP Cloud ERP Private in combination with a fully integrated MES system from T.CON that is based 100% on SAP.

The project was launched in spring 2024. The first system configuration was implemented for the pilot plant in Unterkochen in just 15 months – including system architecture, design phase, integration and functional tests, training, and go-live on July 1, 2025.

All contractually agreed services were delivered on schedule. The new SAP system is productive, and data migration and financial processes have been successfully completed. Munksjö now benefits from a modern, integrated ERP and production system – from materials management to payment runs. More than just technology played a role in the selection of the implementation partner.

Munksjö emphasizes the importance of T.CON as a reliable partner: “In T.CON, we have truly found a suitable IT partner that also fits Munksjö's communication style, making project collaboration very constructive and goal-oriented. Open communication between our project team and the consulting team enables short communication channels. This ensures that cross-departmental processes are coordinated. One challenge was a new project organization that had to find its roles at short notice. Regular status and steering meetings kept everyone involved up to date, highlighted challenges, and defined the next steps with a timeline. T.CON provided excellent support for the necessary system adjustments to map Munksjö-specific processes, both from a technical and cost perspective.”

Reliability as a success factor: the fixed-price project

Another aspect that spoke in favor of T.CON was the customer's desire for a clearly calculable investment framework. This is not a matter of course for a project of this magnitude, but T.CON responded to this need and even offered the entire project at a fixed price. This decision not only underscored the technical certainty in planning and implementation, but also the confidence in its own performance promise. It was precisely this commitment that was a decisive factor for Munksjö in choosing a partner – and a strong signal for partnership-based cooperation.

With the “Sunrise” project, Munksjö benefits from a comprehensive solution and service package that goes far beyond a classic ERP implementation. T.CON not only provides the technical implementation expertise for SAP Business Suite and MES processes, but also deeply rooted process knowledge and modular product solutions that are precisely tailored to the requirements of a paper processing industrial group.

In the ERP area, SAP Cloud ERP Private was introduced as a scalable private cloud platform – the central building block for group-wide business process integration. On the MES side, the system is supplemented by T.CON's own products from the MES SUITE, including e.g. solutions for trim optimization, a digital shiftbook, AI-supported data analysis in real time, and a maintenance solution.

Smart expansion: analytics & sustainability

The overall system was also supplemented by three additional central SAP components that are of great strategic relevance to Munksjö, particularly with regard to transparency, reporting, and sustainability:

SAP Analytics Cloud provides the company with a powerful tool for data visualization and business analytics. It enables complex production and financial data to be evaluated centrally and converted into decision-relevant insights in real time – an important building block for data-driven control and reporting.

The project also focused on integrating two sustainability solutions: SAP Sustainability Control Tower and SAP Sustainability Footprint Management. ESG transparency, legal reporting requirements (e.g., through CSRD), and company-wide climate accounting are becoming increasingly important, especially for energy-intensive industries such as paper production. Both SAP components enable Munksjö to seamlessly record CO₂ emissions at the product and process level, automatically report sustainability metrics, and make informed decisions for greater resource efficiency. This not only enables Munksjö to achieve regulatory compliance, but also positions it technologically for upcoming requirements along the supply chain – including future EU regulations such as EUDR.

In addition, T.CON is providing comprehensive support for the project: from data migration, training, and authorization concepts to change request management and production-related test phases. T.CON will remain involved even after go-live – with direct support in the hypercare phase, both remotely and on-site, as well as through its own application management support team.
