Advancing Technologies for Advancing Industries
Our TORBED technologies turn paper sludge into low carbon products and a renewable energy supply for the paper mill. This is achieved via three process routes, drying, calcination and dirty gas heat recovery, all proven in multiple industrial plants. These plants eliminate landfill costs, produce a sellable mineral, substitute fossil fuels for steam production and generate savings for Yankee hood operation.
Drying with Surplus Process Heat
TORBED dryers can efficiently use waste industrial process heat to dry paper sludge or if necessary, they can be supplementary fired. The TORBED dryers offer the benefits of a reduced footprint, lack of mechanical complexity, high availability and remote operation. The dryer pictured has been drying up to 6 tonnes per hour, pressed wet paper sludge at 60% moisture to create animal bedding at 5% moisture. It has achieved an availability of over 95% per year for over twenty years. The belt dryer that it replaced is in the background of the picture
The Circular Economy: from Paper Sludge to Cement.
Dried paper sludge can be calcined, providing heat for drying and industrial heat for the host paper plant. The plant pictured left includes a TORBED dryer and a TORBED calciner. The resulting ash is an activated lime product which is an effective supplementary cementitious material greatly lowering the carbon footprint of cement when compared to the manufacture of clinker.
Facilitating Renewable Energy
Where hot gases are required for the operation of Yankee hoods, Torftech also offers dirty gas-stream fire tube air to air heat exchangers. The energy can come from either sludge calcination or the exhaust of a biomass furnace. Based on a design that has been in operation for over twenty years, these heat exchangers can deliver clean hot gas derived from renewable fuels.
All of our equipment is a bespoke design for specific plant configurations.
