Another milestone for the digital future at PKV: digitalization specialist T.CON supports the manufacturer of corrugated papers and cardboard with successful SAP S/4HANA implementation

With T.CON and RISE with SAP, PKV is successfully converting to SAP S/4HANA - a milestone on the road to the digital future. German company Papier- und Kartonfabrik Varel (PKV) specializes in sustainable corrugated cardboard and cardboard made from recycled paper and serves customers from a wide range of sectors - from consumer goods to industry. With around 620 employees and four production lines at one location, the company is one of the largest sites in the European paper industry. Together with T.CON, PKV has now taken a significant step towards digital transformation: the introduction of SAP S/4HANA has been completed - the new system was successfully put into operation on April 1, 2025. The go-live of the first project phase has created the basis for a future-proof, modern IT landscape.

As part of the first project phase, central company areas such as finance (FI/CO), maintenance, technical purchasing and key interface processes were successfully implemented. The cooperation between the T.CON team and those responsible at PKV was characterized by trust, technical depth and partnership - a decisive success factor for the project.

"The project progressed professionally, on schedule and efficiently - we are proud of what we have achieved and look forward to the next steps," says project manager Peter Fuchs.

The project was also economically convincing: the go-live took place within the time and quality framework - and even under the originally estimated budget. Improvements in the processes - particularly in the financial area - are already noticeable: shorter processing times, better evaluation options and faster response times are just some of the effects achieved.

Phase two starts: Focus on architecture and logistics

But the journey is not over yet: the next phase started in April 2025, focusing on the areas of sales (SD), production and logistics. The architecture phase was opened with an official kick-off on April 29, followed by detailed AS-IS workshops in May and June. The aim is to put the system landscape in these areas on a modern, integrated foundation.

Why S/4HANA? Why now?

There has never been a better time to set the course for future-proof corporate IT. Anyone who opts for SAP S/4HANA today is starting on a greenfield site - with state-of-the-art standards, clearly structured end-to-end processes and the opportunity to radically streamline and rethink processes. Instead of making compromises with legacy systems, companies can take full advantage of the opportunities offered by digitalization: real-time data, automation, AI-based decision support and flexible cloud architectures are becoming the new normal. PKV has seized this strategic opportunity - with T.CON as an experienced partner at its side.

At the same time, the pressure is also increasing for companies that are still using SAP ECC. SAP support will end in 2027 at the latest, which not only represents a technical turning point, but also poses major organizational challenges. The migration paths are complex and the demand for expertise is increasing rapidly. Those who act too late run the risk of falling behind - both technologically and operationally. An early decision in favor of SAP S/4HANA is therefore not only the order of the day, but also a strategic competitive advantage. RISE projects such as PKV in particular show how a successful transition to the SAP S/4HANA cloud can be achieved.
