Tieto and Metsä Group are taking next steps in digitalizing the forestry ecosystem and developing highly innovative services for timber trading and forestry services. The services include drone and AI based beetle alarm system and a virtual forest asset management system.

"New technology, such as AI and VR, bring new opportunities into service development also within forestry. Metsä Group wants to be in the forefront in this development and aims to pursue new value-added services for our member-customers, and at the same time optimize the fibre supply chain”, says Juha Jumppanen, Metsä Group's Senior Vice President of Member Services.

Tieto, together with the Austrian start-up Festmeter and Metsä Group are developing a pre-warning system for bark beetle that is a major threat to forests. The AI system analyses drone based multispectral images, to recognize changes in plant metabolism caused by beetle infestation long before the human eye.

"Together with Tieto and CTRL Entertainment Metsä Group is now aiming to apply virtual reality on digitized forest assets to further strengthen their leading position. We are further expanding the portfolio of digital services for the wood and fibre supply chain”, says Jaakko Kuusisaari, Director, Wood & Fibre Solutions, Tieto.

Already in 2015 Metsä Group launched an online wood trade and forest service for forest owners that provides them with tools for evaluating forest assets. Together with Tieto and the start-up company CTRL Entertainment, Metsä Group are aiming to apply virtual reality on digitized forest assets to strengthen their leading position within the forestry ecosystem.
