Australia’s total log exports lifted to a monthly record 553.2 km3 in May 2020, a rise of more than 68% on the prior month, but just 2.2% higher than May 2019. Softwood log exports totalled 452.5 km3 for the month, their second highest monthly total.

Australian exports joined a large rise in New Zealand’s exports (reported by IndustryEdge here) in May, as Chinese buyers sought to secure their medium-term supplies against further pandemic-related challenges.

The chart here shows those export volumes and the average export price. Full, searchable and customisable details are available on IndustryEdge’s Wood Market Edge online.

At the same time as log exports rose sharply, woodchip exports from Australia continued to decline, falling to a near seven year monthly low of 344.6 kbdmt (bone dried metric tonnes). That export volume includes all woodchips (including Sandalwood and occasional shipments of pellets). The latest Australian trade data was released Thursday 2nd July and by late afternoon of the same day was loaded to IndustryEdge’s Wood Market Edge online and was available to subscribers.
