Metsä Tissue digitalises its Europe-wide production with Tieto

Metsä Tissue, a part of Metsä Group, has partnered with Tieto to develop its IT environment further and enable modern digitalisation solutions. The new Manufacturing Execution System (MES) will be implemented in their mills in Finland, Sweden, Poland, Slovakia and Germany. The renewal is based on the Tieto Integrated Paper Solution (TIPS) for the global paper industry.

Metsä Tissue is one of the leading manufacturers of tissue papers in Europe and greaseproof papers worldwide. The modernisation of its IT environment will be used to improve efficiency and harmonise operations across all the company’s mills and countries.

The new system includes functions for production management, quality control and operations management and will improve transparency in the value chain. TIPS also includes a wide range of reporting and analytics capabilities that makes Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) and other Key Performance Indicator (KPI) information available to all system users and helps further the development of operations.

“Tieto will deliver us new systems that further support co-operation with Metsä. This project helps us to harmonise our operations and production processes,” says Jari Tiura, Senior Vice President, Operations, Metsä Tissue.

“We are pleased to expand our long-term collaboration with Metsä Group and support them more comprehensively also in their tissue paper business. The tissue paper industry is going through changes and with the support of a higher level of automation and digitalisation, Metsä Tissue’s competitiveness will increase. This will also enable faster and more efficient and flexible reactions to market changes,” says Timo Jäätvuori, Head of Global Sales & Business Development, Pulp and Paper Industry at Tieto.

Tieto’s TIPS solution is optimised for the pulp, paper, board, tissue and flat sheet industries utilising industry-proven best practices. It is the leading MES (Manufacturing Execution System) and has already been installed in 250 paper mills worldwide.
